THE BREATH OF LIFE
A drama written by Sir David Hare
“Life being what it is, one dreams of revenge.” Gauguin’s epigram serves as the motto for this moral tale of two women whose lives are interwoven in ways neither of them yet understands. It tells the story of Madeline Palmer who is confronted by Frances Beale, the wife of her lover, now deceased. Over the course of one day and one night, the two women reflect on their lives and the relationship with the central, yet offstage, male character. It is a vicious and viciously funny play about survival amid lost lives and lost loves.
Directed by Randy Brenner
Running time: 2 hours 10 minutes
The play is one of Hare's finest… A play that is bitingly funny and often deeply affecting.
The piece is elegantly, shrewdly and wittily written!
Many of Hare’s familiar themes of identity, memory, desire, love and disillusionment surface as the beautifully measured, stylishly written piece progresses.
